Resources - Reversing Breast Implant Illness

I am not an expert in ALL things Breast Implant Illness. My personal focus tends to be on healing post-explant. Please use the resources on this page to gather more information with regards to making decisions revolving around Breast Implant Illness and your journey. I hope you find this information useful and if there is anything you would like to see added, please comment below. I will continue to add to this page as I am able to. Thank you!

Recommended Explant Surgeons

These 8 surgeons listed below do explants on a regular basis, believe in Breast Implant Illness, have the most experience with explant surgery, are very skilled, and are committed to en block when possible and complete capsulectomy. They are very reputable among the breast implant illness groups. I personally would only recommend a surgeon from this top 6 list, but I understand that this is not always possible for everyone. You will find additional surgeons listed by state HERE who are also quite reputable. This list was created from countless testimonials from women who have explanted. When choosing an explant surgeon, it is ultimately important to chose someone who you feel comfortable with, who you connect with, and who is committed to performing en block and complete capsulectomy for the best health outcome. I recommend seeking testimonials from women in the various Facebook groups in addition to having consultations with several surgeons until you find the right fit for you. The worst thing you can do is make a rash decision out of panic once you have discovered BII. “Just getting them out” is not ideal nor is it recommended. Please take your time in finding the right surgeon for you.

Top 8 Explant Surgeons:

Dr. Jae Chun – Newport Beach, CA

Dr. Lu-Jean Feng – Cleveland, OH

Dr. Victor Urzola – Costa Rica

Dr. Marguerite Barnett – Sarasota, FL

Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix – Henrico, VA

Dr Dev Vibhakar and Dr David Rankin of Aqua Plastic Surgery –  locations in Jupiter, Ft Lauderdale, and Miami, FL

Dr. Linda Huang – Denver, CO

I consider Anne Ziegenhorn to be the go-to expert for help with insurance pre-authorization before surgery or reimbursement after the fact. I would highly recommend contacting her prior to explant so she can help you get all your ducks in a row so to speak for the best chance of at least some insurance coverage. If you’ve already explanted, no problem, she can still help! Note that not all insurance will cover explant surgery. It is dependent on a number of factors and each policy is different. Her small fee (too small in my opinion) for her service is well worth it to have her in your corner fighting to save you thousands. Here’s what Anne has to say:

Anne Ziegenhorn“Hello, my name is Anne Ziegenhorn, I am not only a BI Survivor, I am a former plastic surgeon scrub tech & Co- Founder of The Implant Truth Survivors Committee Non-Profit who is also an insurance consultant in Ex-plant.

Many insurance companies will allow explant to be covered for
1 of 4 reasons & a surgeon or doctor states it is medically necessary:
1) Cancer diagnosis Breast or ALCL
2) Leak/Rupture
3) Capsular Contracture grade III or IV some ins only accept grade IV
4) Pain in breast that medicine does not take away.

NOT all policies are the same.
Does not matter the Company BCBS, AETNA, UHC, or others, it is how is YOUR policy written.
We all could have BCBS but my policy or plan us different than Christina’s 1 of us got covered the other did not because of how the policy is written.

Also, do not take no as an answer, many ladies thought their insurance would not pay and after I spoke to their insurance it did.

I just know what to ask or how to dig deeper.

I charge a small fee but only after I call your insurance with you or read your policy.

FREE consult approx 5-10 minutes.

Breast Implant Illness: This website truly provides a wealth of priceless information, most of which I don’t have the time to dedicate to creating for you ladies, since most of my time is devoted to helping women heal post-explant:

The Implant Truth Survivors Committee: The Implant Truth Survivors Committee mission is to educate others through their experiences on the dangers of breast implants and changing federal policy to protect women’s health. TITS Committee is also a non-profit helping women with financial hardship get their explant.

Breast Implant Victim Advocacy: Devoted to raising public awareness involving illness and complications due to silicone and saline breast implants.

Breast Implant Info: This website claims to be the most accurate source for information about breast implants so that you can make choices that are best for you.

RubyeDreamsAmber blogs about her story with BII, explanting, and healing.

Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma

FDA: This is the FDA’s newest acknowledgement about this type of cancer.

Additional information:

FDA Reporting System

If you have symptoms of Breast Implant Illness, please report all adverse reactions to the FDA. These reactions can be reported to the FDA through the MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form.

Medical device reports submitted to the FDA can be found in the Manufacturer and User Device Experience (MAUDE) database.

FDA Meeting on March 25 and 26, 2019: The [Medical Devices Advisory] committee will discuss and make recommendations regarding the benefits and risks of breast implants indicated for breast augmentation and reconstruction. For this reason, it is important that you report adverse reactions prior to this meeting if at all possible. If not possible, it is still important to report.
