Health Care vs Wellness Care

Sorry ladies, I have a bit of a bone to pick today, so please bear with me while I rant! Breast implants are expensive. Breast implant illness is even more expensive. We have the costs associated with co-pays, and prescription fees, and lab fees, and coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums, etc. when trying to figure out what the heck is going on with our bodies! We have the cost of our actual health insurance. We have the cost of all the supplements and special diets we try in order to “fix” ourselves when conventional medicine fails us. We have the cost of losing our income when we become too sick to work. We have the cost of explant when we finally wise up and figure out that our implants are making us sick. And then we have the cost of wellness care in order to restore our health after our implants come out. Sometimes this requires working with a practitioner and doing functional lab work and taking specific supplements that insurance doesn’t cover. None of the above even quantifies the cost of our happiness and sanity.

We really need to get out of the mindset in this country that:

  1. Our health is not worth spending money on,

And

  1. Paying out of pocket for testing is a bad thing.

If you want to get real results with your health, then you’re most likely going to have to look outside of what your insurance covers.  Your health insurance is in the business of making MONEY, not doing what’s necessarily best for your health.  When you are diagnosed, your insurance basically determines the “box” you are put into and your plan then dictates what a doctor can and can’t do as they go down an insurance-determined path to get you back to a “healthy” state.  Again – doctors try to provide care that is covered thus your insurance plan dictates how a doctor can treat you. Personalized to your bio-individual needs? I think not. Let’s talk about our health care system for a minute.

Conventional medicine is NOT health care. It is SICK care. There is no focus on prevention or restoring health once it has been lost, whatever the cause. There is no focus on finding the root cause to symptoms or health conditions (remember when you went to your doctor and all your labs were “normal” and they gave you a referral to see a shrink because it’s “all in your head”?). In conventional medicine, there are merely drugs to mask symptoms. Did you know pharmaceutical companies consistently have a profit margin of roughly THREE TIMES the average profit margins of other fortune 500 companies? Have you ever watched one round of commercials while watching TV and NOT seen one that’s aimed at convincing you that there is a pill to cure all of your problems?

There is only disease management in our country, which is not effective because doctors might get one day, at best, of education on nutrition in med school. It’s not their fault; but current curriculum doesn’t prepare them to treat conditions like breast implant illness; it’s as simple as that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a client tell me that their doctor told them that changing their diet won’t help and that it has nothing to do with why they got sick. There is also a lack of focus on adequate supplementation, and things like the importance of rest, exercise, stress reduction, and so on. You will not find a holistic approach in conventional medicine. So if you want a pill for every ill, go see your conventional medical doctor and use your insurance.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not anti-conventional medicine. I think our medical system does serve an important purpose in acute situations where it is needed to save a life. I simply view my health insurance as an accident and injury policy. If we ever get in a bad car accident or I fall down a flight of stairs and break some bones, then I will be grateful to have it. But, when it comes to healing from breast implant illness, healing my autoimmune disease, detoxing my body from these toxic bags, and keeping my body healthy, my insurance offers me zero help because it does not cover the types of practitioners, services, labs, or supplements that I need.

When we step outside the narrow box that we call “health” care, we find a wide range of holistic options available.

-Functional testing that we never even knew existed and that can often times give us the answers we need to finally restore our health after explant.

-Practitioners who can FINALLY give us the answers we have been searching for.

-Strong communities of supportive women who are going through the same thing we are with breast implant illness. Together, we can learn how to heal our toxic, broken bodies and keep our health for the rest of our lives. And we can put this knowledge into practice with our families in order to keep them healthy. The millennial generation are some of the sickest people we’ve ever seen and as a nation we are getting sicker and sicker at a younger and younger age. This makes learning a holistic approach imperative to our children’s health and the health of future generations.

Most of the people I know who are dealing with chronic illness started their healing journey using their regular medical doctor and their health insurance, only to find that they got nowhere. They never got the answers or the help they really needed.

If someone is chronically ill and they have a desire to TRULY heal their body, then they are going to have to look outside of the so-called “health” care system. It is VERY rare that a conventional medical doctor and your health insurance will be able to provide the answers you need because they are limited to what they can offer because of what your insurance will cover.

Please DO NOT let your health insurance confine you to a box if you are in need of healing from breast implant illness. There are so many other options and many times they are not as expensive as you may think.

Does it suck to have to pay out of pocket for these alternative services? Yes, it does.

Wouldn’t it be nice if our health care system covered alternative practitioners, functional lab tests, and supplements? Yes, it would.

Personally, I am not willing to let my “health” care coverage dictate my lifetime of health and wellness. I will continue to explore alternative avenues and I will budget for the future tests I need, even if it means saving in order to get something that I need for my health. I do this because I have made a commitment to my health and the health of my family. I have looked at conventional medicine in the past to give me the answers I needed and it has let me down time and time again.  At the end of the day; what is MORE important than our health outside our family and faith?  Starbucks a few mornings a week?  A newer car?  The latest iPhone?  Ironic how shifted our priorities have become isn’t it?

Just because a test is not covered by your insurance does not mean this test is not worth looking into. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Give me all the tests that insurance doesn’t cover! It simply shows how narrow-minded our conventional medical system is and we have been so ingrained to rely on our insurance and to do exactly what the doctor says without question to help keep us “healthy”. This is a view that simply must change if we are ever going to make strides in true healing.

I want to close with this thought:

The cost of wellness care and working with a holistic health practitioner after explant is worth its weight in gold when you consider how much income you’re losing by not working due to chronic illness. Add to that your passions, interests and your general happiness and the real question is can you afford to stay sick?

Professional Bio

Founder of Reversing Breast Implant Illness. Sarah has a passion for restoring health that has taken her along a path from a practicing RN, to walking away from her conventional nursing career to become a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Practitioner, and Breast Implant Illness and Detox Expert. She believes the solution to Reversing Breast Implant illness is about more than just the explant and that we all need to take personal responsibility for restoring our health by addressing the root causes that contribute to chronic illness: toxicity, infections, trauma, and shame. Sarah’s “pain to purpose” is using her personal experience along with her understanding about the body to guide women through the sea of mis-information about Breast Implant Illness in hopes of finding their path to true and lasting healing.

Sarah was once quite happy and comfortable living the conventional life, but she began to look at things very differently when her body started failing her after getting breast implants. Within about six months of getting breast implants, Sarah began to see her once perfect health steadily decline. She began experiencing a myriad of symptoms which no doctor could explain. No one understood what Sarah was going through. She felt completely alone in this invisible illness because on the outside she looked fine. On the inside, the discomfort of living inside her own body was maddening.

Sarah soon realized she was looking in the wrong places, for the wrong things. If she wanted to fix her broken body, she had to stop looking to treat the symptoms; she had to start looking for a cause. It was time to take her health into her own hands and find real answers. She discovered that the root cause was literally inside of her.

Sarah believes there is always a greater purpose within our struggles, and she believes that purpose for her was to learn how to heal her own body so she could then help other women like her do the same. It is Sarah’s believe that the body has an innate desire to heal if given what it needs and she focuses on teaching natural healing principles. Sarah will teach you how to Reverse Breast Implant Illness, take back your health, and live vibrantly!
